sorry if this book has been mentioned before but I just listened on cd to the book 1861. I found it very interesting and learned quite a lot from it as it deals with the months of 1860 dealing with the election up though Fort Sumter. Many interesting topics discussed including Sumter, the election of 1860, general butler's refusal to send back slaves and of course a good discussion on secession and slavery. Also discussion of such movements and groups such as the wide awakes(something I had not heard of previously). Since I am from Ohio I found the portrayal of James Garfield as very informative. The story about writing one hand in greek, the other in latin, while speaking in English was humorous and something the writer didn't have a whole lot of faith in. Anyway has anyone else read this book and what do you think about it. Sorry I can't remember the author's name.
