I have this decent pistol, all numbers match including wedge, and have been told several interesting things that I need help confirming or debunking. On the frame at the butt near the serial number there is another marking "A43". I have been told that the Union did not mark their guns whereas the Confederacy did? Is that true? It was suggested that this may have been a gun grabbed by the Gray Ghost's 43rd Regiment and so marked. Any thoughts? Or am I just, sorry, whistling Dixie?
Thanks for the kindness of your replies.

The Confederate numbering thing is pure myth!

If you are referring to the Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver, that particular arm stayed in service long after the ACW, and well into the Indian War era. That is actually when the secondary markings on the Colt 1860 Army begin to show up in earnest. The marking you have of "A 43" would more likely be "Company A, 43rd man".
