When you mention mulberries I always think about the old Nursery Rhyme and song, "Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush.". I remember singing it in grade school and playing games.

The actual Mulberry is a tree. It is related to figs and breadfruit. I found this 1850 recipe for Mulberry Pie. It sounds like it would be very tasty.

Mulberry Pie

on 1' x 10' unbaked pie crust
1 quart of mulberries
1 cup flour
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup milk

Fill the pie shell with berries. Mix flour, sugar and milk. Pour the mix over the berries. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes until center is set. Brown top under broiler.

There is a huge mulberry tree behind me in my neighbor's yard. It's been there for years. It was never planted, the mocking birds or catbirds were responsible for its origin. I'll have to walk out back and take a look at it to see if there's any fruit on it. I've already made a few blackberry pies. The birds love them too this time of year since there's no water and it's been steaming hot here the last few weeks.

My family had white and blue fruit mulberry trees when I was growing up. They were delicious but stained your hands and clothing. One evening years ago at the hospital where I worked an English elderly female doc set a canning jar full of blue mulberries on top of the nurses station desk and stated: "Bet you don't know what these are!" I proudly informed her that they were mulberries and surprised the heck out of her. I've never had a pie or other dessert made from mulberries, just the fresh fruit. The taste reminded me of dewberries.
