Although most Civil War soldiers wore forage caps of a more modern design, kepis, or hats, the Forage Cap 1839-1851 appears in Civil War photographs. The US Army version came in three types, however the ones used in the Civil War do not match any of the three US Army types.
This style of forage cap was not uncommon in the Civil War for both Northern and Southern militias and was seen being worn in the early part of the Civil War.
