1821/25 Shako

Found these on Facebook. The 1821 and 25 shako patterns. These "Tarbucket" shakos would have been worn for dress and fatigue from 1821-1825 (the 1851-58 shako was also supposed to be worn universally, though old 1839 forage cap were provided) until the adoption of the "chakos" forage cap in 1825. These shakos were worn until 1832, though the Marines wore them from 1823-1859.

Howdy. The 1821-32 Army caps were not intended for fatigue wear. They were very clumsy. Hard to keep on the head except standing at attention on parade, guard duty, etc. Instead, the Army adopted a gray cloth forage cap for wear with the fatigue dress. it was described as follows:

The Army's dislike for the 1821 forage cap was solved about 1825, when it developed the Chakos for war when the clumsy bell-crowned uniform cap was not necessary, off parade, and for wear in lieu of the forage cap...

Might I add that, impractical as these definitely are to wear, I absolutely love how they look. I was in Dirty Billy's the other day and was practically drooling looking at the display case.

The Army's 1821-32 "peace uniform" was certainly among it's more ornate and fancy in the last 250 years.
