Organized at Grand Rapids, Mich., September 18 to November 23, 1863. Mustered in November 18, 1863. Left State for Lexington, Ky., Decenaber 1, 1863. Attached to District of North Central Kentucky, 1st Division, 23rd Army Corps, Dept. of the Ohio, to April, 1864. 2nd Brigade, 4th Division, 23rd Army Corps, to February, 1865. 2nd Brigade, 4th Division, District of East Tennessee, Dept. of the Cumberland, to July, 1865. Cavalry Brigade, District of East Tennessee, Dept. of the Cumberland, to November, 1865.

Expedition from Strawberry Plains to Clinch Mountain and skirmish January 28-31, 1865 (Co. "M"). Duty at Knoxville till March 21. Stoneman's Expedition from East Tennessee into Southwest Virginia and Western North Carolina March 21-April 25. Brabson's Mills March 25. Boonesville, N. C., March 27. Henry Court House, Va., April 8. Abbott's Creek April 10. High Point April 11. Salisbury April 12. Statesville April 14. Catawba River April 17. Howard's Gap, Blue Ridge Mountains, April 22. Asheville April 26. Duty at Lenoir Station and Sweetwater till August, and in West Tennessee till November. Mustered out November 11, 1865.

Regiment lost during service 2 Officers and 29 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 240 Enlisted men by disease. Total 271.

There is limited information on the 10th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. The Detroit daily newspapers would have many articles (They are indexed under 10th Michigan Cavalry). The Regiment formed in Grand Rapids and the Grand Rapids Civil War era newspapers would have articles, letters and such but I am not sure what information these weekly newspapers would have I am unsure of (they are not indexed). The books with information are as follows:

Major William H. Dunn

Birth: 1844
Death: 1934
Expired Image Removed
William H. Dunn of Ganges, MI served in the 5th & 10th Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War. He was at Gettysburg where he rescued General Luther Trowbridge from capture and eventually was promoted through the ranks as Captain of Co. E. in the 10th MI Cav. & Bvt. Major. He was present at the capture and death of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and was part of the Stoneman Raid to burn down the Salisbury Confederate Prison. Wife: Mary, he had two daughters. His brothers also served in the 5th MI Cavalry.
Even at at advanced age Major Dunn was remembered for his dashing looks and leading the Veteran's Parades on a white horse through Saugatuck, Michigan. He died at about age 90 and some of his papers are preserved at various archives including the US Army Military History Institute, the State Archives of Michigan, Bentley Historical Libary at the University of Michigan, and the Saugatuck Museum.

The Detroit newspapers have 40 articles on the 10th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. These articles appear to run from simple reports of where the unit was to letters from them.

Trying to learn more about the Blue side of my CW veteran ancestry. William Schrader (1844-1911). He served relatively briefly (3-9-65 - final muster) with the Michigan 10th Cavalry A Company. I'm guessing he was fortunate to enlist so late in the War.

Keith Blaylock formally enlisted in the Union Army's 10th Michigan Cavalry, Company D on 6/1/1864 in east Tennessee, serving primarily as a scout. He was discharged 10/21/1865 in Memphis,TN. Keith is mentioned in a report from the OR (Official Records) by a Sergeant Lewis Selgrade of Co.B 15th PA Cavalry. The following is an excerpt from the lengthy report of a scouting mission into east Tennessee.

"Started early the following day for Valley Head; found the road down the mountain pretty steep and rought. One of the horses (belonging to Company C) became so lame he could not keep up and I was obliged to leave him in charge of the guide (Blaylock), with others to take him back on the mountain road to camp. When we got within a short distance of the foot of the mountain saw a mounted rebel in the road ahead of us, toward Will's Valley; as soon as he saw us he turned and ran; we gave chase, but he turned into the woods and made his escape".

William McKesson Blalock also joined the 10th Michigan Cavalry, although his company commanding officer believed that Blalock was a deserter. He stated that after joining, Blalock disappeared. We know that he was raiding homes in the Globe section of Caldwell County, North Carolina.
