First Bull Run 10 pounder Parrott no. 10

Here's a bit about my "Parrott Project" from the latest Artilleryman magazine

Hopefully that will get you some answers. Trying to ID a tube that was captured by the CS is a tough one as they did not keep good records and if there is a record out there from the CS side it could have been lost or destroyed as many were.

Thx, maybe I should do anew thread on this but I'd really love to find a list of the 50+ tubes the 11th PA cavalry dug up near Red Oak Church. Articles I've seen (at least one on this site) somewhat imply that such a record was made. I haven't looked in the histories of the 11th PA cav, as I couldn't find a free one online. Anyone have one they will check for that info?

Thanks, saved me a lot of trouble and/or $, Not much more, says Elliot's squadron sent to check out reports of abandoned arty there. If there's more detail my search didnt find.

We know there are very few records of registry numbers related to specific units, especially in the CSA. Seemed like one approach was to identify those units that we know, or think received one or more of the nine 2.9 Parrotts captured at Bull Run. Then we read the unit history to see if anything stands out:


"So here's the "final list" of Confederate batteries we think had one or more 10-pounder Parrott rifles that were captured at Bull Run. How sure we are ranges from "certain" such as 1st Rockbridge, to "maybe" as with Nottoway.

Henrico Company B Artillery
Lynchburg Artillery
Nottoway Artillery
Reilly's Battery
Richmond 'Crenshaw' Artillery
Richmond Howitzers"

Then we read the unit history to see if anything stands out:

With all my years of researching, here is my 2 cents on this. I would be looking in the battery, regimental and brigade artilley officers individual records. Here is an example as I took the Richmond Howitzers as a sample. The Second and Third Companies were created under Captains John Thompson Brown. His records in Fold 3 are 57 pages and contain a LOT of info. If you look at the second page he is requesting 100 3 inch rifle shells. You will need to drill down to who the commanders were during this time frame and check each of their records.

I don't look for gun # I research for relic hunting CS camp site but you never know what you are going to fine as all of officers reports, letters etc are in their personnel records on Fold3.

I will tell you what you are looking for and it is a noble effort you will not find as the CS did not care about tube # just the caliber.
