Hello all, When Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, reached the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where they faced Meade's Union Army and in conclusion, Lee's Army surrendered to the Union Army.

How did Lee's army's surrender to the Union Army at Gettysburg?

The Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania was engaged during July 1 to July 3, 1863. Lee's Confederate "Army of Northern Virginia" withdrew from the battlefield the next day, and successfully retreated southward, back into Virginia, pursued by General Meade's Army.

General Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia only surrendered to United States troops at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, on April 9, 1865.

At Gettysburg, General Lee's Confederate army suffered many casualties; about 28,000 men killed, wounded, missing in action, or captured.

General Meade's Union "Army of the Potomac" secured over 12,000 of them as prisoners during and after the battle. Here's a photograph of a few Confederate soldiers of Lee's army captured at Gettysburg.

While General Lee's army was defeated in the battle at Gettysburg, and lost many men, and much equipment, etc., it managed to escape the battlefield and Pennsylvania, and return to Virginia to continue fighting.
