The fact the US was forced to resort to conscription proves this. That the war was a war of conquest and deeply unpopular. The substitute provision makes clear it was a rich mans war and a poor mans fight. US conscription is proof there was no real support in the north for ending slavery . US conscription is proof that Lincoln was nothing more than a political prostitute willing to send thousands of conscripts to their deaths for the benefit of northern economic elites.
US conscription was also a handy tool to corral votes to help Lincoln steal the 64 election. What soldier when given the hint by his superior to vote Lincoln would dare do otherwise.

U.S. conscription was necessary because the Confederates had resorted to conscription a full year earlier. That's the way war works. When your opponent resorts to a distasteful tactic, usually you have to respond in kind. The fact that the U.S. was able to wait until a year after the Confederates did it speaks volumes.

The north had like 4times as many people as the south, if there was such great support for not letting the seceding states go there would have been no need for conscription.

We had conscription in World Wars I and II. Of course there were people who thought Wilson and FDR were "political prostitutes willing to send thousands of conscripts to their deaths for the benefit of......"
In the 2 world wars we had nations formally declare a state of war against the US. Prior to US entry into ww1 you had the Zimmerman[Germany] note offering Mexico US territory if it went to war with US.

The term"rich mans war poor mans fight" comes from the South. Only 5% of the Union Army was draftees. I have a thread "how serious was Union desertion" that with sources where some Northern municipalities paid for draft substitions plus their were private insurance companies that had policies to pay for substitutes.
How many Confederate soldiers defected and joined the Union Army vs Union soldiers that did the same? Why did the Confederacy have to torture Southern white women to find out where their conscript evader men folk were?

Who said that the Civil War was popular in the North? Without the close to 300k white and black Southerners in the Union military plus thousands more Unionist guerillas the Confederacy most likely would of prevailed.

I am not claiming the CS wasn't fighting a rich mans war. The fact that 5% of union forces were draft is proof the north was also fighting a rich mans war, plus how many union volunteers joined for the enlistment bonus.

Has did Duane Presley when he twice ripped off enlistment bonuses from the Confederacy:bounce:

Of the 16 million Americans who served in the US military during the Second World War, ten million were drafted. The US Army, which received the majority of those who were drafted, had more conscripts than volunteers.

Was the American war effort in WW2 deeply unpopular and a war of conquest?

I said in my opening statement the war was unpopular, what I am pointing out is the public was willing to let the south go and the elites were not and resorted to conscription to prevent secession.

In addition to the draft, the United States has been able to help many countries in the fight against fascism.

Probably pretty unpopular if you were a draftee in an infantry unit. Was it a war of conquest, it was if you were a German or Japanese in 1945.
