When I was a kid in the '60s we were fed a steady diet of comedies from the 1930s on TV. Laurel & Hardy, The Three Stooges, W.C. Fields, The Marx Brothers, and all the rest were always poking fun at beards. Stuffy foreign dignitaries and old men with long whiskers were a never ending source of beard gags. Over or under the sheets, birds flying out, soup dribbling, and on and on. Beards were Victorian, beards were old fashioned, beards were comic.
I still can't take a long beard seriously.

Speaking of hair, I just grabbed this pic because this fellow has a little wave upon his head.

And I like the look on this fellow's face.

By the way ... I see a lot of generals wearing this ribbon or sash tied on their left arms. What's the significance of that? Does anybody know?

The problem of such attractive pogonotomy is that one needs to have access to a professional moustachery to maintain it.

As for myself, I sport the full, "J.E.B. Stuart". Expired Image Removed Very low maintenance.

That makes sense. I've noticed that these kind of elaborate facial hair styles seems to be limited to officers, generals, and a number of the "gentlemen" that Brady took pics of. These kinds of beards were much rarer among the soldiers, when I was looking through the Lillenthal collection at the LoC. So it is a class thing.

Who's the CSA fellow in your avatar, @Greyfalcon? I've seen him before but I can't place him right now. There's some nice facial hair right there.

Wearing the ribbon in honor of Abe Lincoln who was killed just before the war ended. I think many of the men had their photos taken when the war ended.

Mr. Ribbon Sash? The last photo in post #28? That's David D. Porter. He's not missing a hand. He's wearing only one glove. Several (many?) photos of the men wearing only one glove were taken.

That is Gen. Henry Hopkins Sibley. Commander of the Confederate, Army of New Mexico. He led the expedition into my native state that ended in disaster. He was a kind, sensitive man....but a hopeless alcoholic. He was constantly being relieved of command for drunkenness. He did however bless the army of both sides with his invention of the 'Sibley tent', and of course, he grew a mean crop of facial hair.

The plains Indians could have sued him for copyright infringement, however.

THAT makes much more sense. I had an idea that it was some kind of mourning thing but didn't know for sure.

I saw something under his sleeve that looked like a rolled-up ball of cloth -- that was his glove. That too makes more sense!

I wonder if Porter always sat at his writing desk like that. If I tried that pose, I'd never get anything done.

sure you wouldn't as your desk simply fell on your toes - it's no way a writing desk, probably a tea table
