We need some real beards.

I see beards are back in style again. I see 'em at Target, I saw 'em all over the field during the Royals' World Series a couple years ago. But these guys need to understand how beards were back in the day. If they can see the historical precedents for their beards, and understand beard history, they'd be better off today. What do you mean, this doesn't make any sense? Let me show you how real men grew real beards back when we had real wars. Because if it's in the past, it's more real. Why are you giving me this "logic" talk, that's not even a word.

Before and After (but not in between)
This gentleman was well known during the war for his magnificent full beard (not to mention his superb generalship). But, towards the end of his life, he decided on a change of pace, and did a full-blown Burnside:

That chin hadn't been seen since the 1840s:

EDIT: CORRECTION, the second photo is not of Longstreet, but of Capt. T.J. Goree. Thank you, @GELongstreet

From Rosefiend's post above...

I looked and thought, nice mustache and beard, but I could grow that. Then I looked again. That's all below his mouth. Naw.... can't be. Yes it is!

How'd he do that? He's got the whole beard and mustache combo starting below his mouth. I'm impressed. Also keeps curls of mustache hair from getting into his mouth. Very efficient. And impressive.

Lieutenant General John McAllister Schofield graduated from West Point and moved quickly up the ranks, commanding the entire Army of the Frontier by 1863. He scored brilliant victories against the Confederate Army at the Battles of Franklin and Nashville, before joining General Sherman's army in North Carolina

Ah, Rosie: you have to go to a real sport played by real men, to see real beards. Here is Joe Thornton from my favourite hockey team, the San Jose Sharks

Oh no say it aint so, Joe. He was a nice, clean cut young boy when he broke in with the Bruins and now look at him! Perhaps he was Ambrose Burnsides in a previous life.

David! David -- snap out of it! The boy grew into a man. This isn't football, y'know: our boys grow into their manhood and embrace it :) Long live Playoff Beards!!!

Sorry, Rosie, I could not this comment pass unchallenged. I shall provide more CW beards when my assistant is not glaring at me :(

There's still that dark shadow where his mouth is, between his moustache and his beard. I mean, where his second mouth is, below his first mouth. :dog: How he do dat?
