Camp Chase Gazette

Up and down in terms of quality content. Quite a few event reports and I hazard to say, if you've read one of those you've read them all. If you are interested in the hobby though, it is the only magazine currently dedicated to it. For better or worse, that's it. There is bound to be something in there you'll enjoy reading.

I used to be a subscriber way back when. But I dropped it when my subscription ran out. It started to come out haphazardly, and it seemed that only 3 or 4 people wrote all the articles. And the staff photographer(s) only took pictures of people they knew. I never resubscribed I didn't know it was still out there I thought it folded like alot of other publications. But go for it if you wish, I hope that it has improved with time.

The March/April 2016 issue of CCG just arrived in my mailbox and it is a good one in terms of content. Excellent article on CS uniforms from Fred Adolphus (who wrote a good book on Peter Tait uniforms), plus an expanded version of Phil McBride's post on this forum on what he would buy to outfit himself if he had it to do all over again knowing what he knows now. Good color images...well worth reading.

I recommend Civil War News instead. I was just sold/purchased and the first two issues were good, a continuation of newsy stuff. Now full color too.

I get Civil War News and I am relieved that they are continuing it. I read extensively and like the book reviews. I should be getting my first copy of the gazette and I'll give it a try.

I came across the Camp Chase Gazette website and it looked as though I might want to subscribe. Does anyone get the gazette and is it worth it?
a company in Morristown Tn publishes 3 periodicals. The Camp Chase Gazette is a bi-monthly magazine format. The Civil War Courier is a monthly newspaper format. The Citizen's Companion is magazine format aimed at period civilian topics. you get them mailed to you hard copy,..or can get an electronic version of the Gazette for $15 a year. Go to campchase.com or call 1 800 624-0281 ext 460. They were running a deal to get both. Both mags have some excellent photography & some interesting & thought provoking articles. They maintain a nice event calendar, & have a free classified ad section with for sale/recruiting/misc. From time to time they offer a free issue as a trial, call them & ask about it.

I'm one of the guys who keeps writing articles about reenacting for the Camp Chase Gazette. While the magazine has certainly had its ups and downs, it has survived as a print magazine in a world of folded tents among printed periodicals.

The new May-June issue has an excellent and well illustrated article on Confederate uniforms by Fred Adolphus, who is a well-known and well-respected researcher. The second of a series on artillery drill is included, which is interesting for non-artillery guys like me. And there's a good overview of the US Colored Troops involvement in the war. And a piece I wrote about reenacting as a Union Zouave once or twice a year since 2003, even though I live in Texas.

I do agree with Craig Berry's comments about event reports all seem alike after you've read a few, but they are a legitimate part of writing about the hobby. I write them sometimes and strive to find some thread of uniqueness about an event rather than describing who moved where on the battlefield.

I think the Camp Chase Gazette is still a good magazine and a good way to keep up with our fine hobby. A subscription worth the money.

I just received my first issue (May/ June) and like it. The artillery drill article is interesting. Like Civil War News, I look forward to the next issue.
