JEB Stuart's hat

Back on the topic of pictures, I found one today I'd never seen before. Is anyone else familiar with this one? His beard certainly seems shorter than in most of the others, and it definitely looks like he's wearing some sort of suit instead of a uniform.

I think that was taken while he was in Washington before the war, trying to get the War Department to purchase his sword hanger design. (Maybe during Brown's raid?) At least I'm fairly certain it's pre-war by a bit. Let's ask @K Hale!

He looks honest. I'd buy a sword hanger from him haha.

Looks like just one, but perhaps there were others absconded with before the MoC got it.

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with the hat, but it's a great picture of the SABER, about which I'd like to point out: this is the French M.1822 light cavalry officer's, evident from not only the leaf decorations on the branches of the knucklebow, but also the POLISHED HORN ( NOT leather or "sharkskin/rayskin" ) grip. The U.S. M.1840 "wristbreaker" was copied after this French model, but we substituted a "sharkskin" covered grip and added a panel of etching to the blade. ( French enlisted men's sabres also had leather-covered grips like our M.1840 though. )

That is in fact exactly what I was going to suggest. Of course there's no way to know for sure, but it fits.

There are only about a half dozen photos of Stuart in existence. I keep hoping someday someone will turn up a new one.

The government bought it from him! But he put the money in a U.S. bank and the account was frozen during the war. Late in 1863, I think it was, he wrote about hiring someone to try to legally get his money out of the bank. I don't know how it worked out.

Think I read somewhere - maybe Wert's biography - that Stuart had put it in a bank in St Louis. He wanted to invest in land with the proceeds from the hangers. Considering the westward expansion was gearing up well, he had a good idea there! Also think he had to buy back any that weren't sold but, if things had gone the way they seemed to been going but for the war, he likely wouldn't have lost much!

We're generally pretty good at answers if you're patient. And if you make friends with James N. and Joe Walker they'll let you see the sabers in the trunk of the car...and actually handle 'em. The sabers...not James and Joe.

Hi. I'm seeking anybody that can tell me more about the hats that JEB Stuart wore during the war, especially the colors they were, any insignia on them, and what they looked like overall. I've seen the one in the Museum of the Confederacy, and they list it as originally being grey in color and now faded to tan. I've also read accounts of him wearing a light brown one, a "whitish" one, a "fawn colored" one, a grey one, and a black Hardee hat style. I've tried to research as many primary sources as I can. I was wondering if anyone knew more about the one he lost at Verdiersville, the one he wore at the Brandy Station review (which has conflicting eyewitness accounts), and anything else anyone may know. My apologies if this has been asked already, but I searched the forums and couldn't find anything. I also understand that nobody was sitting around doing an inventory of what everyone wore Thanks in advance for any help.
