I recommend the following books for those interested in Zouave uniforms.

Brian Pohanka's own Vortex of Hell deserves a mention. He was THE expert on the 5th New York "Duryee Zouaves," one of the premier Zouave regiments in the war. This book is his legacy.

Troiani also has another book specifically dedicated to Zouaves.

Someone have information about "Galveston Zouaves"? are a militia units or company of a Texas regiment? wore zouaves uniforms or only name?

Many states had Zouave militia companies at the start of the Civil War. Some wore beautiful uniforms and some uniforms were on the ugly side.

Brian Pohanka was my Company Commander from 1992- 2005 until his death. His campfire chats were the best. The photo was taken in 1998 in Poughkeepsie. Role model & friend . Deeply missed.I'm 4th from the right,Front row kneeling

Michael McAfee is a well known expert of Civil War uniforms. Michael McAfee's Zouaves The First and The Bravest, shown in post #2 originally came out as a West Point Museum Bulletin.

If you are interested in Zouaves, this West Point Bulletin is essentially the same as the book post #2 but the book has added photographs not found in the West Point Bulletin version It is not necessary to have both versions of the books unless you are interested in comparing the Bulletin with the later version.

I have a handful of Civil War Zouave Ancestors:

Lemuel Adolphus VanBuskirk 33rd New Jersey Infantry

Second VanBuskirk was in a New York Zouave Infantry regiment.

Not sure which third VanBuskirk was in will have to go through the list that I have.

A 5th New York uniform plate that accompanied R.J. Stafford's article 5th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Duruee' Zouaves), Union Army, Civil War, 1861.

Remember, Zouaves weren't just confined to the Eastern Theater of the war. The 8th Missouri, American Zouaves served in the Army of the Tennessee until the end of the war.

33rd New Jersey were mostly in the western theater until after the march to the sea then they participated in the Carolinas Campaign.

Ah now I remember it's the 74th New York Zouaves.

The VanBuskirk in that regiment died at the Battle of Williamsburg.
