I read a story yesterday online about a new image of Jesse James being found. This one came off ebay. They did not list the authenticating sources, but I have some ideas who they might be, but I think someone is going to spend a lot of money for something questionable. I mean they are estimating $2 Million. I have strong doubts about the image.

I saw it yesterday too, thought it a bit odd in story acted like it was very credible, but doesn't match known images I know of.....

Would think it has to be within a couple years of his famous guerrilla photo.....not seeing the resemblance...........

One question I have is about the cost of images in the 1850's and 60's? I don't understand how people of poor to moderate means could afford a lot of images. I cannot remember seeing a price guide on images from the time. The authenticity claims are crucial, because it has gotten to be big business to make them, the Billy the Kid and Pat Garret image claim, has largely been panned. True West Magazine reports on these image finds pretty often.

The best evidence here is the photo itself - not of the subject, but the background, props, etc. This could certainly be a photo of Jesse, but if it IS he would be a young teen, which he was at the beginning of the war. Unfortunately, the backdrop, his pose, and his attire all suggest a later period, say 1870's. So if it's Jesse he's time-traveled at least a decade into the future to have his "likeness" made!

My first impression as well was that is a post-Civil War image.

Great share @mofederal! I have never heard what an image in the 1850's and 60's might have cost. I would be curious to find out. Hopefully someone will know and share.

Early in war before prices probably rose - from Diary of John G Morrison

Dec 12th (1861), Thursday. Arose at 6 1/2. Finnegan had the fire going. Hated to get up, I felt so comfortable. Had to, if I did not want to do an extra guard. Expended a dollar to have my likeness taken in Ambrotype to send home, as my dear wife has been asking me to do.

He also wrote on what happens when his regiment made their colonel mad during drilling the day before
Sept 13th, Friday. Went out digging today. Walked about 4 miles to our work and then found ourselves about five minutes walk from our own encampment. ……

In these photos of Jesse from the LOC he has light eyes. In the OP photo he has dark eyes?

What cracks me up is the $$$ these wannabe gold diggers see, the guerrilla photo sold in 2013 for $7000, the older photo sold for $51000 in 2011 and its even believed to be signed by jesse...........so how is a dubious looking photo with no provenance est at 2 million?.............

the photo reminds me more of Adams family then Jesse...........

I have seen this young man's image given as a photo of Jesse quite a number of times. For example, look at this image on the James Family Museum website:

https://www.awesomestories.com/asset/view/Jesse-James-Fourteen-Years-Old

Or you could scroll down and peruse this image, supposedly Jesse and Frank in 1872. It's the same young man on the left, but I am not at all sure that's Frank on the right, and it sure as HECK isn't as late as 1872. Maybe 1862, but there's no way it's 1872. Scroll down to second image and take a look:

On the other hand, there is no mistaking the face of Frank James.
