I have my schedule for my Bowling Green trip in 3 weeks finished and now I'm trying to figure out the best place for a winter trip. Mobile is preferred but requires more time than I can possibly allocate. That leaves either a return trip to Nashville which would include Fortress Rosecrans and a short stop at Stones River. Thompson's Station, Franklin and the Nashville sites also. I have been to Stones River and Franklin 3 times and seen most of the Nashville sites as well as Spring Hill twice. Atlanta I have been to twice, the first time visiting only Kennesaw Mountain and the Atlanta History Center(attended a race also which took up most of the time). Second time I visited Kennesaw Mountain again as well as Stone Mountain, Pickett's Mill, New Hope Church and Gilgal Church but the trip concentrated on the Great Locomotive Chase from Ringgold to Kennesaw. Also stops were made at Peachtree Creek and the MLK historical site. This time it would concentrate on battle sites around Atlanta including once again Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek and the Atlanta History Center. I realize most of the battlefields have been swallowed up but still plan on stops for the battle of Atlanta (Driving tour of locations available), Ezra Church, Ultoy Creek, Jonesboro and Lovejoy Station. Will try and hit up sites with just markers on the different defense lines from the leading up to Kennesaw Mountain as well which would include a return to New Hope Church. With proper preparation and a little imagination I have found even sites where the battlefield is mostly gone can be a great experience. An example of that would be The Battle of the Monongahela in Braddock, Pennsylvania. A visit to one of the Gone With the Wind Museums (Jonesboro the most likely) and Margaret Mitchell's house possibly also. Touch choice but leaning Atlanta.
