Hi - New member here. Joined to learn more about Gettysburg.

Was wondering if anyone had information on the property around Willoughby Run. There is a house that sits below McPherson's barn along the road. Is it the toll house that people refer to?

Welcome, @Phil Wise! Good question about the house near McPherson's barn. This post by @pamc153PA contains a great historic view of the Chambersburg Pike and notes that both toll houses that once stood along that road have been gone for many years. Pam or one of her fellow Gettysburg experts on this forum probably could tell you something about the history of the house in your question.

Thank you for the quick reply! I am curious about that area and have always wondered since that home basically sits on the road and is surrounded by the NPS Land. I have found old aerial pictures but they mainly capture the current Warner farm west of it.

The following map, a photograph of an original prepared by Emmor B. Cope in October 1863 shows the toll house along the banks of Willoughby Run on the same side of the road as the McPherson buildings.

Here is an 1870s photograph of the area where the 150th Pennsylvania charged from left to right, or south to north to outflank the 32nd North Carolina who was moving up the slope from west to east (up the slope, toward the camera position). The toll house is located on the right (north) side of the pike at the bottom of the slope near Willoughby Run, and the toll keeper's house on the left side of the pike. The Herr Barn is visible to the left of the tree above the toll keeper's house. This view was taken facing northwest in the 1870s.
