Pre-War Profession Black Hawk War, graduated West Point 1837, service against Seminoles, garrison duty and instructor at West Point, Mexican war, duties in the West and duty again against Seminoles.
War Service May 1861 Maj. 5th US Artillery, September 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 4th Bde in North Carolina expedition, commanded Fort Hatteras, commanded 2nd Bde at New Orleans, attacked by Confederates trying to recapture Baton Rouge
 
Was just reading an article about Gen. Williams in the July 1975 Civil War Times Illustrated. Article suggest the men thought him as tyrant!
