I'm more than certain that he is wearing a ribbon of mourning for Lincoln, dating this picture to before he was General of the Army (1869), but after the Assassination (1865).

Wonderful! Sherman was sure skinny - see how much room on that little chair? (And I think he gave himself that haircut...:confused:) He has a kind of Dickensian look, doesn't he? :D
 
Him and Forrest together would mop the floor with everybody! (Come to think of it, though, Forrest had been known to do that sort of thing all by himself alone...! :confused:) I wouldn't count Grant out at any time, though - he was small but tough.

Grant, Forrest, Sherman, 'Bull' Nelson. I believe we've just put together the best wrestling team that ever existed.

You are correct re the mourning crepe worn on Sherman's left arm.
