As many of you know, I am writing the biography of Union General August Willich. A source I am using, cited by a number of historians, is William Sumner Dodge's History of the Old Second Division, Army of the Cumberland, published in 1864.
In this book, Dodge makes it clear that he was a "participant" in the events he writes about and seems to have close connections to some Illinois regiments. Several authors, like Peter Cozzens and Tim Smith call him a "correspondent", but I have yet to find any reference that describes his function or rank.
I am hoping that this is a big soft ball to someone in the CWT universe. Google has been no help to me so far.
Does anyone have biographical information on this fellow? Thanks.
