Who was Andy Devine?

As a young boy watching re-runs of old westerns and seeing him as Jingles on the Wild Bill Hickok Show, I mostly remember Andy Devine as a fat, happy-go-lucky guy who made me feel good when I saw him on TV.

Andy Devine was in 'Red Badge of Courage'….amongst others….

He's credited as the 'Cheery Soldier'…He's the one (in the movie) that comes across The Audie Murphy character when he's trying to find his way back to his regiment at night…after having 'skedaddled' during the days battle….Audie Murphy is beating himself up from running during his first battle…and the Devine character comes across him while carrying a lantern in the dark (Audie is staggering from a head injury)…he takes Audie with him because he knows where his regiment is now located. He constantly talks to Audie…and comes across as a middle aged man ('now, son…')
