This was considered a monument? The veterans of the 4th Maine must have been really hard up for cash! :tongue:
I have never seen documentation, but the guides I have spoken with hypothesize that some 4th ME veterans visiting the field before there was a monument wanted to memorialize the place where they fought. The sun was just right the day I got this picture, so that you can even make out the Third Corps Badge. It is my opinion (and it's only an opinion) that without the fight by the 4th ME, Little Round
Top may have been overrun, notwithstanding the efforts of Vincent's Brigade.
