what to see

we live in mo an im planning on taking my son on a battlefield trip prob around the first couple weeks of june. i will have 10 days or so, money is limited. im planning on gettysburg of course, but would like to see more confederate victory sites. anyway, what do we absolutely not wanna miss given our limited time. ive never been any farther east than ky.

Well if it's Confederate victory sites you should only need 3 days. (Just kidding!). Antietam is (next to Fredericksburg) the most clearly understandable battlefield IMO at which Marse Robert did rather well. Those two.

If you do Fredericksburg (and make sure you do both ends of the field) it's natural to hit Chancellorsville too (and the Wilderness) but those are difficult fields to follow - not as interesting perhaps to a young person?

Manassas of course gives you two Confederate victories for the price of one. So that one as well.

The Shenandoah Valley is pretty amazing, easy to roll in with Gburg and Antietam...and Lexington is a great end spot, with Stonewall's grave, Lee's tomb, VMI, etc.

I'd include Fredericksburg VA in your plans. I've never toured the battlefield park but I've seen parts of it moving around the area. The old town is pretty cool, with many Civil War era buildings still standing.

F'burg also has the advantage of being very close by to the Chancellorsville, Wilderness and Spotsylvania parks. Early June is a good time, as the whole area is oppressively hot and humid for most of the summer.

thanks guys, so i will get the maps out and start looking for a route that takes us to those areas. i have been to wilsons creek, pea ridge, and perryville. so looking forward to getting to va.
