This item was found in an area of the Battle of Kennesaw Mt. where Hooker's troops were operating. The diamond shape leads me to think that this might be a Third Corps badge since remnants of the Third Corps were serving with Hooker in the Atlanta Campaign. There're small solder spots on the reverse indicating a missing pin. It measures 1/2' x 2 1/2'. Thoughts anyone?

If you haven't seen the position & nature of the marks you don't have all of the available evidence. What makes you think they are actually solder marks?
I'm making the judgment on observing the solder marks on the unsoldered soldered relics I've dug. Old solder marks are usually pretty dull and dark but occasionally a bright spot will be seen on a button that lost it's soldered on shank, depends on the solder's alloy.

I'm pretty sure those are solder marks (but I'm no expert). They look much like the one on a plain Virginia cross belt plate that I found. The whatsit was found on a very steep, very rocky hillside. At times you even had to hold on to a tree to swing the detector. I can't imagine a lady way out there wearing jewelry.

I do appreciate your comments!

Maybe it started at the top of the hillside and has been working its way down for over 100 years. Maybe it belonged to someone's girlfriend, wife or daughter and they took it off to war as a good luck piece or to remind them of somebody left at home. I'm sure there are many other possibilities.

Unusual finds show up in unusual places defying all logic.

FWIW - AI says its post 1880 Victorian jewelry... a pin worn horizontally at the collar of high necked blouses. It originally had gold or silver gilt-wash that has worn away.......
