When the Marines stormed the Harper's Ferry Arsenal, one tried to run John Brown through with his sword. The dress sword deflected off Brown's belt buckle.
What if he'd missed the buckle, especially with a proper sword? Brown is dead before the day is over. No nonsensical charges of treason against Virginia, no fiery testimony in his trial, no calmly going to the hallows in a public spectacle.
In that case does John Brown's Raid have the same impact? I can imagine it still frightening the South without making any impact in the North.
