In a series of posts on CivilWarTalk over the years I have explored how cavalry raids, adolescent behavior by officers, Joe Wheeler, etc destroyed the Confederacy. My latest post was how building extravagantly expensive fortresses in 1860-61 doomed the Confederacy.
Confederate defeat was a cloth woven of many threads. The warp was slavery. The woof was as varied as a profound misunderstanding of how the Deep South slave trade actually worked, the dearth of salt works essential for preserving meat & the almost clownish financial system. Many contemporary commentators said that the CSA was destroyed by the theory of state's rights.
What do you think? Is there a particular issue that you believe contributed materially to the defeat of the Confederate States of America? Let's start a conversation.
