What are these four things?

I think the picture Mr Serpa posted clinched it. If you look at the blown up picture of them on the first page, they closely reesemble the shot placed on top of the stump as in Mr Serpa's picture. Why the heck they did it I have no idea but sure is what it looks like. IMHO

By the way anyone notice there is a fellow sitting against the bank in the upper left of the photo? Look to the left of the left most rifle stack about the middle of the dirt wall at the bottom. He is almost blured out.

Looks like he's got a plate and is eating, doesn't it? Good catch! There are several people around the tents, by the way.

Is this another one of those things in the lower left corner?

Battery on drill inside of Fort, ca. 1860 - ca. 1865

Looks considerably different to me, but it is hard to tell because it is out of focus at the edge of the field. Looks more like a rough hewn piece of wood sticking out of the ground with hemispherical cap resting on it at about a 45 to 60 degree angle.

Considering that the other pile in the other picture is of ammunition (spent or new) with a berm in front and the unidentified objects in the same pit, they would appear to be related to explosive ordnance.

Remember also that the garrison had been required to remove land mines immediately after the fort was taken.

I agree with the other poster that the other unidentified thing looked most like a tree stump.

I can go with rockets of some sort. Looking at the red/cyan 3D version, it's clear that they're leaned upright on the opposite side of a mound, not driven directly into the ground.

Possibilities in order of likelihood:
1. Too many muskets in the stack, couldn't accommodate anymore
2. Tired of confusion trying to find mine in the stack, especially at night (guard duty)-need to get to it quick.
3. Setting up supports for a cover of some sort with canvas or blankets and line

Attach rope or string between 2 rifles. Connect 2 shelter halfs to each other and place over rope. Peg shelter halves in ground = 2 man tent. There appears to be 4th rifle leaning against cannon that could partner up with 3rd rifle thats standing alone.
