NF Weirdest ACW Author Ever...?

Non-Fiction
They do. It gives grifters the aura of Biblical authority. Similar to those fake "colonels" we're familiar with. Paging Sea Raven Press and "Colonel" Lochlain Seabrook ...
I suspected as much! gives 'em about as much authority as a dead frog in my book ! Same for the fake colonels.

There's another book that attempted to be a Southern answer to Uncle Tom called Aunt Phillis's Cabin; or, Southern Life as It by Mary Henderson Eastman. It sold decently well but is not on the same literary level as Harriett Beecher Stowe.

"Eastman uses quotations from various sources–including Uncle Tom's Cabin–to explain that slavery is a natural institution, and essential to life."

"Like other novels of the genre, it contains much dialogue between masters and slaves, in which she portrays "the essential happiness of slaves in the South as compared to the inevitable sufferings of free blacks and the working classes in the North," as noted by the scholar Stephen Railton in the website Uncle Tom's Cabin & American Culture."

I find slavery apologia more abhorrent than slavery itself. No matter how it happened emancipation of the large number of Southern slaves was going to have practical difficulties. Even Thomas Jefferson claimed to be befuddled by the problem. But if slavery was so great why didn't white people voluntarily become slaves? Surely the Irish, mistreated as they were in the North, would have sought it out. Slavery apologia is basically gaslighting on the societal level.

Eastman's husband, Seth Eastman, was a career army officer who stayed loyal during the war. He also was an artist. They're an interesting couple.

You're absolutely spot on about slavery apologia. At the end of the day, a slave was still human property with many rights restricted. A poor free laborer still faced hardships but could, in theory, have full control over their own fate. Chattel slavery was one of the great evils of this country's existence. As we know, they phased out indentured servitude and stopped attempting to use indigenous captives as the main sources of slave labor in favor of using the African markets because it was a horrible existence. Importing people from a far away place with no option to return on their own and keeping them for generations was essential for sustaining the institution, but so was manufacturing consent among the white community who either participated or witnessed the unnatural arrangement. Over time the rights of slaves were further restricted and the harshness was increased to keep control; these things required defenders maintaining the consent everywhere from public spaces to private homes to church services. At the time of the 1860 census the net worth of accumulated human property was the largest source of wealth in the country. Those who sought to excuse evil are not thought of kindly today when they are thought about at all.

In sales it's called "deferring to a higher authority".
It occurs to me that all of these losers have one thing in common,
they are bipedal cowpies whose evolutionary progress and mental acuity can be measured with a micrometer

I worked on a ranch one summer in college. You just managed to insult cow flops. These guys probably attract more flies ...

I started a Breaker thread:

Look, someone's gotta say it, so it may as well be me. There is help available. Reach out. You don't have to sit in darkness googling bunk historians. Please, PLEASE, today, right NOW, pick up the phone & call your local 12-Step Can't Stop Posting Bunk Historians Anonymous chapter for a meeting schedule. Okay? We care. I care. You can do it, Talltallman. IT WORKS IF YOU WORK IT.

Actually, this would be terrific advice for the "Reverend". Just don't cc: me on the email.

I have surfed through that stuff as well. Ever perform a Orchiectomy ?
It's not just for breakfast anymore. 🤠
You had to mention that. The grazing allotment we worked was near a sheep allotment - a strange set of folks. And yes, they do that the "old fashioned way". That helped narrow my post-college career planning ....

Me too! I was a freshman at the U of U, got a summer job on a sheep ranch first day, I was told to hold their legs while this old timer used his teeth to, huh, well, then he spit 'em into a bucket, smiled at me and said, "there's lunch!"
That was my last day working with sheep.
