An article in the 21 February, 1862 Memphis Appeal describes the uniforms of Terry's Texas Rangers and mentions one solder wore an entire suit of bearskin while several others wore bearskin pants. Artists have depicted the soldier wearing a whole suit made from bearskin. CivilWarTalk has had threads about this. Still I have to wonder about the several soldiers who wore bearskin trousers. What purpose would bearskin trousers serve? If the hair was left on the bearskin it would seem like bearskin trousers would be 'unbearably' hot. If the hairy bearskin trousers got wet they would have taken forever to dry. How would one wash their bearskin trousers?
