Visiting Shiloh and Corinth this Weekend

My grandson and I, @kilroy15, are headed to Shiloh and Corinth this weekend. Planning to meet up with neighbors and old friends (young and pure of heart) and visit many monuments and cannons that are hard to get to when the heat/humidity/growth/insects interfere with our visit. In November the leaves are falling and one and can see many tablets and markers that are difficult to see during the Spring and Summer.

I am planning to take additional pictures of the two Napoleon 12 pounders located in the Battery Robinette mock up at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center and then roam the Park for awhile Saturday afternoon. I am going to take additonal pictures of the only two 3" Ordance Rifles located at Williard's Battery (A) 1st Illinois Light Artillery position just North of Bloody Pond (Monument #105 Location F8) Trailhead Graphic Map.

I am also going to stop by Shiloh Tours and Museum* and visit with Larry DeBerry the most knowledgeable guide about Shiloh. If you ever get to Shiloh stop by and see Larry. I plan to pick up a Shiloh coffee cup for my friend @Seduzal and maybe a tee shirt for @Desert Kid

Hope everyone has a wonderful and a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving. Please remember our men and woman who are serving around the world who will not be spending the holiday at home with family.

It's a perfect weekend for a Shiloh-Corinth excursion.

Ya'll should have plenty of time to enjoy the park and still make it back down the road to Oxford
for the Ole Miss / Texas A&M game tonight !

Wow, what a coincidence; I'm going to be there also and maybe I'll run into you. Also, remember that Battery Robinette had 20 pound Parrott guns during the battle, but the two Napoleons that are there now are premium examples.

I'm with you Bro. it's going to be a balmy 72 degrees in my den and at our advanced age, there isn't enough Peppermint Schnapps in the stadium to keep us warm.

RedBob I am somewhat surprised that Shiloh National Park was not shipped many more 12 pounder Napoleons for displayed. I am fairly certain that the US Army had phased out all muzzle loaded artillery by the time the Park was established in the 1890's. I have seen a slew of them at Gettysburg as well as at Antietam. Puzzling.

It was awesome being there today . Hit a few trails and had a great visit with Mr.Deberry .

I made it to the game (my son's fraternity had family weekend) and it was indeed cold! I stayed 'till the end of 3rd quarter but got this neat picture before game started. An awesome victory! Hope your trip to Shiloh went well!!

At least some of those 12 pounders at other Parks are 6 pounders bored out to 4.62". Evidently when the War Department was emptying the arsenals of their obsolete ordnance they weren't very selective in what they sent as evidenced by the tubes on the battlefields that weren't even cast when the battles were fought. Plus, I suspect that 12# Napoleons were much in demand as were Parrott's and 3" Ordnance Rifles. Also, when they ran out of originals they had cast iron tubes made-not bronze ones as they were too expensive though easier to make.
