Visiting Gettysburg

When my son got his Make-A-Wish trip granted, it was to go to Civil War sites, particularly Gettysburg and Fredricksburg. (In case you are wondering Make-A-Wish  grants wishes to critically ill children, my son is now a cancer surviver.) The first part of the trip was to Gettysburg. We arrived after dark. I had the most overwhelming feeling of many people there all around my family, we were still in the car. My neck went stiff from the sudden pressure. I didn't understand until I glanced at the sign saying we had enetered the battlefield. Some of my kids noticed the change of the "feel" around us, as well.

One of the many other experiences there, was when we went to the Shriver House. I could hear laughing coming from one of the rooms, like children playing, and when our guide let us look in the room there was no one there. I could literally smell food cooking, but there wasn't anyway there would have been on the old stove the family had used. When the guide took us to the attic I was completely surprised to find no soldiers there, it was so real I actually forgot that they would be gone from there for so many years.

What a great wish! I am a MAW wish granter and would love to have a chance to work on such a wish. That would be great!

I hope it was a wonderful and fulfilling experience for your son as well as the whole family.

One of the shops in Gettysburg has a photo of a young man that they outfitted as a soldier to fulfill his wish.

Best wishes to you and your family!
Jennifer

I didn't smell food, or hear any kids playing. Darn if you're not luckier than I to have experienced those things.

Great chance...

Gettysburg is a great oportunity to visit and research.May your son get as much out of the visit as my son did.
