Visiting Chattanooga

Depending on how much time you have the battlefield at Chickamauga and be sure to see the Fuller gun collection. The National Cemetery in Chattanooga is a must see.

Hi... I will be staying at the Lookout Mountain Lodge this coming weekend. Making the trip from Western Canada and would appreciate any advice on what to see in the area.
How many days will you be there?

Point Park and the Craven's House is on Lookout Mountain. Missionary Ridge is a few mikes from the mountain. Whole Ridge is covered in Civil War monuments and tablets. Sherman's Reserve is the largest portion saved from residential construction. Downtown you have the Choo Choo, Aquarium, Hunter Art Museum. Orchard Knob is close to the National Cemetery. Brown's Ferry is on Moccasin Bend. Part of the Archaeological District.

As has been mentioned the Chickamauga Battlefield is about 10 miles from Lookout. The 1st National Battlefield. Fantastic Visitors Center and small arms display.

Definitely visit Lookout Mountain, but it is only a small part of the Chattanooga and Chickamauga National Military Park. I recommend an entire day for Chickamauga itself, if not two. The battlefield there is very well preserved and is quite spread out. If you enjoy battlefield trekking, I would also not hesitate in checking out some of the many walking trails. During our first visit, I purchased a battlefield guide book from the gift shop, which contained a play by play of the entire battle as it unfolded. The guide books will allow you to go off the beaten path and see the field through the eyes of the soldier.

I thoroughly recommend this battlefield guide series https://www.amazon.com/Chickamauga-...ttlefields/dp/0803298021?tag=civilwartalkc-20.

Signal Point is a relatively quick stop and is an impressive sight.

Hi everyone. I agree with Rock City and the railway leading up from St. Elmo. Tiftonia has the reflecting pool and a nature walk on the west side of the mountain. Raccoon Caverns are also there. Point Park and Chickamauga Battlefield is a must see for the Civil War. There is the railroad roundhouse downtown that is worth looking into. Signal Point at the top of Signal Mountain is also a favorite spot for the Civil War enthusiast.
Lubliner.

See the flying saucer house on Signal Mountain.

I didn't have enough time to take in all the sites in Chattanooga unfortunately but enjoyed my short stay. I would have loved to have visited the nearby battlefields but at least I got to ride on the lookout mountain railroad. I'd recommended it.

The park on top of Lookout Mountain and the NPS center with the painting of the Battle Above the Clouds are worth the visit.
But if you really want to see where the battle was fought, then go to the Craven's House. Take the trails that go around to the western face and follow Rifle Pit trail. You will see the stone wall that was used by CS General Walthall's Mississippi brigade that faced the 3 Union divisions. There was no fighting on top of the mountain but that is a beautiful view.

Spectacular view indeed.
