Grant agreed to let the defenders march out of the city and once outside of the works, lay down their arms and colors. Which road or roads did this take place?Did they march past Grant's lines? I was just wondering if the site today is located in the tangle of trees and under brush or if there is some sort of marker.
In Winston Groom's book, he made the point that the rebs could read the flag messages between Grant and Porter. They therefore knew that Porter told Grant that it would take most if not all of the fleet to transport the confederate army north as prisoners, so he was against that idea. So on July 3rd, Pemberton knew he had a good chance to ask if they could just lay down their arms and leave. I had never heard that before.
