UPDATE: PHOTOS IN COMMENTS THREAD

I'm in Vicksburg now, staying at the Battlefield Campground and riding my ebike into the park tomorrow. Top priorities for me are the 30th Ohio Monuments and the Cairo.

But what else should I make sure to see?

That all depends on how much time you have as you can spend a week and not see all there is to see. Just stopping at all the monuments in the park would take 2 days.

My ancestor's regimental monument. He volunteered to carry the scaling ladders in the attack on Stockade Redan on May 22.

The regiment's farthest advance. But CPL Archinal was at those two markers at the bottom of the fort.

Fort Hill overlook. Mississippi River used to run there, but it changed after a flood. Now it's a branch of the Yazoo River.

Besides the Courthouse Museum, which is FANTASTIC, also go see The Civil War Museum on Washington Street in downtown Vicksburg. It's below the Courthouse Museum and well worth the visit. Tons of artifacts, documents, etc......While you're in Vicksburg, go tour the McRaven House. It was located behind the Railroad Redoubt and is a great tour.

This is a timely posting. I am planning a visit in November. I already hired one of the Vicksburg Guides. The various suggestions of other things to see are most helpful. Thanks to all who made suggestions.

The photos are excellent! 9th US Regulars should enter one in the monthly photo contest.

One more note to 9th US Regulars: "Thank you for your service."

We can load up some law mowers and hit some of those areas and save the government some time and money...lol
In exchange for WHAT I WONDER.:D

I was thinking about that while I was there. All that topography has *got* to be a difficult mowing job. I would imagine that's why it goes so long between cuts.
Very true.

But it's never been as bad as it is today.

Even in the early 1990's, the entire park was well maintained.
During the Spring/Summer months, visitors would always see or hear
lawn mowers everywhere.

The NPS used some kind of block and tackle/pulley mowing apparatus for those
steep bluffs.

But I think those days are now gone forever.
