Nice image, it's taken from the top of the Warren County Courthouse looking north. This photo dates from the Union occupation period, probably 1864 or 1865.

There are tents set up behind the buildings on the river bank. The river looks to be near flood, probably in the Spring.

The long barrack buildings down by the river were put up during the Union occupation of the city. Most of the wartime pictures taken of Vicksburg were done in 1864-65. There were some taken in 1863 right after the siege ended, but the majority of them were taken in 1864-65. If I knew the photographer that took the picture, I could give you a more definite date, as I have done a good bit of research on the galleries operating in Vicksburg during the Union occupation of the city.

The modern site of Fort Hill is not in the picture, it would be further east (to the right).

I'm intrigued how far you can see across the point; Federal ships above would have been clearly visible from the vantage of the courthouse. That's not something that comes through in the maps.

I have been on top of the Warren County Courthouse many times, and the view from up there is amazing.

It didn't occur to me to go up there when I visited... perhaps because I can't get a look at the actual Mississippi from there as it was in 1862-3. The photo does that, which is what's particularly interesting... do you know any more of that sort?
