I've always been puzzeled about why the
so called " modern academic types" trend to ignore Grant's early attempts to capture Vicksburg.

And Gawd forbid ... if someone should mention the death and destruction for both North & South at
Chickasaw Bayou.

That was the cavalry unit assigned to Sherman's corps on the march inland from Grand Gulf if I'm not mistaken. @Championhilz, didn't you write an article on a tough little battle they fought on the Big Black late in the siege?

Yes, the battle of Hill's Plantation, June 22, 1863. For it's size it was a mean little fight.
