My great grandfather fought for IOWA at Vicksburg. Going to see the town this November. Any recommendations about what to zone in on?

I am new to site. Not sure if my post is appropriate. I do have a favorite story regarding my great grandfather that I could post . Maybe under favorite stories. BFM. Margie
Perfect question for this site. The personal story would make it even more perfect.

What unit was he in?

For your favorite story, I'd recommend putting the post in the Soldiers' Tales forum, which deals with soldiers' individual experiences. If you want, you could also make a post about your great grandfather's full service and experiences in the Researching Ancestry forum.

There are several of us on here that are always interested in anything relating to Vicksburg. The Iowa troops were very prominent in the attacks of May 19, 22.

Yes battle fields and museums especially.

Unlike the Vicksburg Park, which covers mainly the siege, the Campaign portion is rather large and spread out.

Such sites include:

Chickasaw Bayou battlefield
Grant's canal
Grand Gulf battlefield
Port Gibson battlefield
Raymond battlefield
Champion Hill battlefield
Big Black battlefield.

Except for the Canal, Grand Gulf and Raymond, most of these sites are largely undeveloped, uninterpreted, and require some knowledge of roads to get there. And even then, it's hard to know what you're looking at when you get there. There are some driving guides that could help.

Very little of the Jackson battlefield remains— and the area today is not particularly safe. There are two museums, including in the old Capitol building in downtown, you might find interesting. But opinions regarding Jackson's safety, even downtown, varies among people. I say that just as a heads up.

I live near Vicksburg and will be glad to assist you in any way. The Old Courthouse museum is another museum in Vicksburg you should also consider.

Welcome to the forum !

The Vicksburg National Military Park is not large enough for focus on one aspect of the entire Campaign.
Depending upon what roads the NPS hasn't closed due to bluff erosion, it normally takes about two hours to drive through the park.
There is much to see and learn. One of the best highlites is the original Civil War ironclad USS Cairo.

However if one is from Iowa, the Iowa memorial is a "must see".
While not as grand as the Illinois Roman Temple monument, ever since I was a young child, there was something about the Iowa monument that impressed my young self.
