I'm wondering if there is a file of the National Tribune newspapers in the National Archives in Washington.
Grandfather wrote several articles and letters for the Tribune and on occasion received letters from veterans.
He had just completed his first year at Moores Hill Male and Female College in the spring of 1861.
The 7th Indiana was one of the first six regiments organized for three months (in deference to the five who
served in the Mexican War). Grandfather turned 18 in June 1861 and enlisted at the blacksmith's shop.
He survived two wounds and served for three years. He later became an lawyer and judge in Grayson, KY.
I have the original letters written by the veterans along with his history of the 7th Indiana Infantry Regiment.

The weekly National Tribune can be accessed through the below Library of Congress site. I've been going through month by month looking for Gettysburg articles, selecting a specific year (from and to), then typing in a search for "National Tribune January" (and so on by month). In your case, you might try your grandfather's surname and "7th Indiana" over a span of post-war years.

As for "packages" for haversacks, I'm not sure what he is referring to, unless maybe hardtack drawn from a commissary wagon

Packages might be a reference to the wrapped packs of cartridges from the cartridge boxes at Codori farm? Possibly no room in their cartridge boxes so they put these in their haversacks? Or am I not reading this in the proper context.

Possibly. I've read about soldiers stuffing extra cartridges in their pockets, but supposed that haversacks might be a little grimy from fresh provisions like pork or beef.

Agree this is more likely.
