In 1969 Louis Davison punlished a curious booklet called United States Monitors and Confederate Rams.
As might be expected the Union half was far more accurate than the Confederate, On the last page was a set of four vertical profiles, with the notation " Nothing is basically known about these ships, the drawings are approximations of what they might have looked like ".
My copy has become damaged over the years but here it is, with dimensions apended, you will see the last one is titled CSS Mobile, but he shows it as 317ft long by 48ft wide. I have amended the dimensions to show CSS Mobile and the Yazoo monster.
For GustavFlyer I've drawn up simplified plans of the ships .

Interesting... it looks to me like that's what Tony Gibbons based his (small, undetailed) visual of Wilmington on for his Warships and Naval Battles of the Civil War. It's almost identical to that.

Hi John,
More great designs to add o the collection, Still can't wait for your book (or will be books?)

GRIZZ

Oh ya, when I was plastering up the walls down stairs made some changes, One of the walls for my workroom had built upon a book case . well I cut a hole in this wall, added extra shelves and plan to put in a piece of plexi glass. When I do start building models again this will be my display case (with no kids able to get at them),

Hi Grizz, Those designs won't be in the book, just a bit of fun really.

It is quite obvious (now that you point it out). I don't know how I missed that. My bad! I think that one would be particularly interesting as a 3D model. Can you hazard a guess about the possible color-scheme? Black casemate? Gray?

LOL. Never mind.
How's this for a suggestion ? As it's basically a fictitious ship, black hull, dark or light grey casemate, black stack, white flag masts and boats, decks scrubbed oak or pine. Hatchways black. Ensign J.M.Brooke's proposed CSN flag.

If there was ever a time I'd have preferred for David D. Porter to be MORE verbose about something, accurately or not, it's in his uncharacteristically concise description of "the monster." Dang the man...
