Hi there, once again.
I'm currently in the very last stages of planning my next project a large scale model (1:72) of the USS Choctaw as she appeared in April 1863.
Since about 2 years I am in the process of gathering any kind of information about this particular vessel. I have collected some books, several pictures from several publications and of course the internet. I have been able to find a set of plans which seems to be of sufficient quality and now I am about to start the actual building of this model.
There is however a few last things that need clarification and that is the reason why I would like to ask some specific questions right here on this forum and I really hope that some of you might come up with some plausible answers and further information.
So here we go:
I have found this plan on the internet but unfortunately not the best quality. Otherwise this plan seems to be very interesting, Does anyone here knew of a better/higher quality of this plan, I really would like to get this plan but I have no idea where to find this publication
In some pictures you can clearly see that the lower portion of the commanding bridge is a oval or rounded structure but on this painting which seems otherwise to be of high quality the structure below the bridge is clearly rectangular. Does anyone here knows which one is correct? Or was this structure rebuilt sometime?
The same is for the structure between the wheelhouses, in the painting it is clearly open to the rear and in the plan as well as in most models it not closed to the rear. In fact there are several models around which all show different structures between those wheelhouses at different levels, I'm now trying to find out which one is correct.
In almost all publications, drawings and other models the upper decks of the ship is wooden planks but in this photo of Choctaws crew you can see clearly that the deck behind the forward deckhouse appears to be whatever but not wooden planks in fact it looks as if this deck was also armored with iron , any information about this?
I would be very grateful for any information you might have and would share with me. I will start the buidling process within the next few weeks and of course I will post pictures of my effort right here. As I have already said I have found quite some informations about this ship and if there is anything you might need or which I can help, please feel free to ask I will gladly share all my informations with anyone here.
