USS Cairo

Great article. It's of particular interest to me as I modeled the Cairo in 3D a couple of years back, worked with a park ranger at Vicksburg to make sure I did it correctly. I want to make the trip there to see the ship, and gather photo source to make my version of her more accurate. Expired Image Removed

Interesting article.

One point I'd just like to make... this article and others make it sound like Ed Bearss and company simply jumped into a boat and rowed up and down the Yazoo with a compass to find the Cairo. In fact, that was just the final stage of the search; there was a lot of historical legwork, chasing down rumors and family stories, etc., prior to that.

I had the genuine privilege of hearing Ed Bearss himself recount the story of finding U.S.S. Cairo not long ago. Listening to him tell the story is an opportunity not to be missed, in part because it takes him almost as long to tell the story as it did to find the ship.
:frantic:
