Hi there,

first of all I have to excuse myself, because this is strictly not a Civil War era subject but since it was influenced by all those spar torpedo boats of the civil war, I think I should post this here on this forum. Should I create any trouble with that, please let me know and I will stop doing so.
I have registered on this forum many month ago, when I had the plan to start building of a certain civil war ship in the next future. Well a lot of things hapenend till then and that particular plan, even if it is still alive has been postponed until a few other things have been finished. One of these is this very project here that I have started to work on a few weeks ago.

Some years ago I have built several torpedo boats, semisubmersible and subarines of the civil war used by the Confederates and the Union. I'm currently in the last stages of publishing a little book about them which will incude their history as well as the built models. During that time I stumbled across a few more pictures and plans of some really unusual vessels which were built during that time either by the South or the North, some of them are now on my bucket list but this here made it first. I was able to obtain some plans during a trip to Charleston SC a few years ago and finally I found the time to give it a go.
So here it is, one hell of an unsual vessel the USS Alarm, which was built in 1874. If you want to hear more about the history of this monstrosity let me know but for this time I want to show you all, what I have achieved sofar. The model is still far from being complete, I have just started to work on it and it will take several more weeks if not month until I will be able to finish it. The scale is 1:72 as all my models, which translatesinto a model of about 69cm which is a bit over 27 inch. This will give you an idea of the size of this model.
If you have any questions about this model, just let me know. I will gladly answer as fast as I can.
I aslso hope that some questions that I will have will find an answer on this forum.

Here are the photos which show the model from the very beginning of its construction until today:

Thanks for posting these great pictures. I think this is entirely appropriate for this forum, given the technological linage under discussion. I will ask that the mods transfer this thread over to the Naval War forum, though, where I think you'll have a focused audience. We have lots of naval-gazing folks around here, @Mark F. Jenkins @Story @USS ALASKA @Bil R @Kazziga @rebelatsea @DaveBrt @shipmodeler @JohnDLittlefield @TinCan @Waterloo50 @Carronade @OwenEgan among others.

We would love to see more images of your models, if you care to share them. We also have a forum (OUR Authors) to discuss your upcoming book, when the time comes.

That's a really interest way of working the hull -- filling in between the bulkheads with putty or filler of some sort, and then forming the hull plating over that. How did you do the vertical lines of rivets, please?
