The reference on Find-a-Grave to serving on the "European blockade" is connected to his service on U.S.S. Niagara, which was patroling for Confederate raiders in Europe -- not actually blockading any ports there. Niagara and Sacramento had C.S.S. Stonewall cornered for a time at Ferrol. Mark is the guy on that topic.
