US and CS hat images

I have snagged head gear off both sites for my electronic file. If you like caps and hats, I have over 300 different ones on my pinterest site, along with uniform jackets, coats and trousers. As it is a work in progress, I have some recent additions from my previous posting and am up to about 1,100 images. You can go direct to the sites for most of the images I have found. I missed a few auction sites caps over the last month or so, but there are a number of sites which have great caps for sale or just for filing away for folks who may want to see what the originals looked like.

Please explain what "chasseur style" means. I've seen the term many times but never understood it. What makes a kepi a "chasseur"? Thanks.

Chasseur cap is just another fancy term to denote what we generally call the Kepi.... Chasseur in French means Hunter... same phrase term also used to designate their Light Infantry..... which wore this style of cap, etc...

Thanks. I guess I was making too much of it. On the hat site in the link, I noticed that some of the kepis were labeled as "chasseur style". Other were not. I thought it might have something to do with the stitching or the shape of the bill or who knows what.

I do see changes in some details of lots of caps. For example, some bills rounded and others pretty straight across the front. On some, the top seems to sit...well...on TOP, while on others the sides seem to curl over to a recessed top disk. I never understood why the details weren't all standardized, but I suppose it's because of various manufacturers.

I thought the CS mostly used the kepi and civilian hats.

VERY INTERESTING!
A slouch hat is usually referring to really any sort of "civilian style" wide brimmed hat. Both North and South wore them, though they definitely saw the widest use among the Confederates. Although, many Federal troops in the western theater also wore either slouch hats or the Hardee hat.

Still, I think a good portion of troops in the Army of Northern Virginia were wearing kepis and bummers, though probably the majority in the Army of Tennessee and other western commands were wearing slouchs.

David Hull you have an impressive web site. The State of Michigan Historical Museum has a temporary Civil War display and perhaps I should photograph some of the uniform items in this temporary display. These uniform items are keep in storage and may not be displayed again for decades.

One item I might skip is the shirt Major Henry Wirz wore the day he was hung. Nice details of a Civil War era shirt, but kind of disturbing, at least disturbing to me.

Thanks Bill. You should absolutely get some pictures while the stuff is "oot and aboot" as they say in Da UP. Speaking of which, have you ever been to Ft Wilkins? I think when I retire, I might just have to go up there to work for the summers as a full time reenactor. It used to be a great place to visit in the summers but I have not been in 10 years or so.

Yes I have been to Fort Wilkins. Sadly my wife had us stop at so many antique shops on the drive that we arrived at Fort Wilkins 45 minutes before it closed for the night so my visit was hurried.

UNION OFFICERS BURNSIDE SLOUCH HAT 6TH INFANTRY

What is the difference between that hat, and a Hardee Hat?

Not much... it was just the officers version.... and variations of them do exist. The officer grade hat had much higher quality of workmanship and normally found with a sewn tape edging and a few other perks.... Enlisted version just had several rows of plain stitching void of the border tape....

Intermixed terminology... many of the truer Chasseur styles typically had a slightly longer-larger brim... The Kepi generally had a shorter one.... but many interpose the respective terms regardless. Many variations exist, this mainly contributed to the various makers and contractors that were out there... You are correct in the observation.... one would normally assume and expect they all would be following a given detailed pattern...some did... many didn't....

Thanks for the follow up. I always appreciate information like this.
