Matthew Brady images

Absolutely fascinating. I cannot wrap my mind around the technology, so it is strange. It really does bring the scenes to life like never before. I have been a purist, only liking the original B&W images, however, I am fascinated by them, and they are growing on me.

I like these things. I saw ine of troops from CDV, what hsve you, but then someone mentioned everyone had good teeth.

I'm all for it though. As ling as we all get a few things:

Aood 360° of Gideon Wells and his rug.

James Leadly drinking

And when we get sound in these an hour og Jubal Earky's foul mouth and bad attitude.

These novel color transformations of b/w images into staged brief snapshot scenes, seem unnatural and unrealistic (to me). The lack of sounds and dialogue present in the scenes also contribute to the lack of realism.

Thought the narration was more informative than the visuals.

The BIG problem is how color was shown on these older B&W plates. Red often came out as BLACK as did Yellow on some emulsions, Red varied a lot since it came in varieties from madder red (quite dark) to scarlet. Ambrotype and tintype were direct prints onto coated metal sheet and thus mirror images. While the unaltered photos are probably better, they do not show the colors correctly. My example is of a USMC guard. I was quite taken when I researched the Marines' uniform and how it did not show on the original:
1864 USMC Washington Navy Yard.webp

The original is a detailed portrait of these men. Then I looked up the colors (note the NCO on the left does not seem to have any stripes on his arm)
1864 USMC Colored.webp

The yellow/gold was completely obscured as was the red wrt to the blue of the jacket.

BTW I also researched the photo on the video -
1862 Union 95th Pennsylvania Infantry (Gosline's Zouaves)2 color.webp

Yes. The 95th had RED shirts. It is hard to show exactly WHICH red since I use tranparent color over the greyscale. The original is quite dark.
