Upside-down Buckle...?

It is a tintype in a full floral thermoplastic case.

Interesting - it appears to have the depth and coloration of a glass-plate. As I indicated I've seen relatively few demonstrably Confederate tintypes and think that slightly newer process had yet to make inroads with Southern photographers. (And soon the blockade put a dent in importing any photographic supplies and chemicals.) After all, if you'd only fairly recently established your business and it was successful, why convert to this process just because it was a couple of years newer; besides, until they really caught on - mainly because they were more durable and CHEAPER - most customers supposedly thought ambrotypes looked better.

Supposedly a soldier from North Carolina.
