Unit deployments

The union having the task of recovering rebel territory had no choice but to deploy units far from home state.
The confederacy on the other hand was fighting a war of defense.
Question was it wise for the confederacy to deploy units to far off duty assignments. Example Texas units serving with ANV while their families/homes left vulnerable not only to union forces but Comanche raiding parties.
Would there have been more effective confederate defense if units were deploy/assigned to departments that included their state.
Example all of Virginia/North Carolina combined into one department with all units from those two states assigned to it.
The soldier is going to have feelings for what is taking place at home the hardship and danger faced by loved ones, easing that concern is part of keeping him in the fight.
Did Confederates sow seeds of defeat with how they structured forces, deployments and assignments?
