McClellan often is celebrated for his organizational abilities and building the AoP from the rabble coming out of First Manassas to the proud and highly competent Army of the Potomac.

In this regard, who was McClellan's equivalent in the West? Union western armies had much more early success, was there any one personality who should get the credit for building out the the Western fighting forces? Grant? Buell?
