Uniforms Union Shell Jacket Markings Identification

Hello, I've had this Federal Artillery Shell Jacket for about 3 years. I've noticed one of the sleeves, it appears to say "damaged" and has a lot more markings. I'm no expert on identifying markings in original jackets, could anyone tell me what all the markings are and why one appears to say "damaged." Thanks in advance!

Wow! Nice looking jacket you got there! The "damaged" question's already been answered, but those dots and the number were used to denote size. The army made coats and trousers in four sizes, as follows:

1 dot/#1 - 36 chest, 32 waist
2 dots/#2 - 38 chest, 34 waist
3 dots/#3 - 40 chest, 36 waist
4 dots/#4 - 42 chest, 38 waist

I can only see three dots, but there's a number four which leads me to believe that the fourth dot is folded over in the photo. The Schuykill Arsenal in Philadelphia marked in red ink, all other aresenals in black. The use of dots for sizes was officialy ended at the end of 1862, but some arsenals continued to apply dots.
