[Iowa Miss]

Need assistance in researching John Edward Couenhoven or Counhover. He has a military stone in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls, Iowa
and only U S Navy appears on the stone with his name.

On his GAR card, (Charles Payne Post #141) is the following after War Record: O. Sgt. N.S.; the line underneath that has: Landsman Str Stuga Da Cuba.
He enlisted July 1862 and was MO Sept 1865.

According to Find A Grave he was born in New York 12 Oct 1847 and died in Iowa Falls 11 Nov 1903.

Seeking information as to what his role was in the Navy.

He was a Landsman on three ships: The USS Vermont, USS Minnesota, and USS Santiago de Cuba. A Landsman in the navy was comparable to a Private in the army.

The pension file for Fanny, the widow of John Edward Couenhoven, has been digitized (84 pages) and can be downloaded from Fold3.com.
